Tubman Museum Grand Opening and Pan-African Festival of Georgia

A full day of activities begins at 11:00 AM with a march from 340 Walnut Street, the site of the original Tubman Museum to its new home at 310 Cherry Street.  Lead by the Macon/Bibb Police Honor Guard. The Southwest drum squad and participates are scheduled to march. The public is invited to participate in this symbolic procession from the museum’s old home to its new one.

Directly after the march there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on the terrace in front of the new Museum’s Cherry Street entrance.  The public is invited to join with Museum founder Richard Keil, Museum trustees and supporters, and members of local government to celebrate the legacy and the bright future of a very special institution.

At 1:00 PM the new Tubman museum will open its doors to the public.  Family Day at the Museum will include guided group tours, classes and activities for children led by local artists, and music and dance performances by local groups throughout the day.  On the first day of operation, admission to the Museum is only $5.00 for non-members and FREE to members.

The Pan African Festival of Georgia celebrates its 19th year with a day-long street festival in Cherry Street Plaza.  The Festival in the Plaza features games and special activities for kids, as well as music and dance performances by local groups during the day.  Come shop and browse in the African Marketplace which features cuisine from throughout the African diaspora, and arts and crafts from around the world.

At 6:30 PM there will be a raffle drawing for a new car.  The winner of the Raffle gets the keys to a brand new 2015 Nissan Sentra courtesy of Butler Nissan.

At 7:00 PM the day’s activities conclude with a Concert in the Plaza. IT’S OUR WAY TO SAY THANK YOU!!!! This free concert features classic R&B act The S.O.S. Band.  First, enjoy Caribbean and World Music by local favorites Dean Brown and Dubshak, then dance the night away to classic 70’s and 80’s hits like Just Be Good to Me, Take Your Time, Tell Me If You Still Care, and many more as one of the hottest R&B/Funk/disco acts of the seventies and eighties jam the night away in honor of Macon’s newest downtown attraction.  This concert is free, and the public is welcome.
